How an Acid Imbalance can cause Serious Health Problems

Causes of Illness & Disease Part 3

Acidosis, or the over-acidity in the body tissues, is one of the basic causes of diseases, especially arthritic and rheumatic diseases. Acidosis destroys bones, because the body has to steal alkalizing minerals from them to keep the blood pH from dropping into the acid range. If the acid alkaline balance is upset, cell metabolism suffers, leading to conditions such as fatigue.

The balance of acid and alkaline in our body is therefore essential to good health.

Acidity and alkalinity are measured in pH (potential of Hydrogen). The pH scale goes from 1 to 14, with 1 the most acidic and 14 the most alkaline. Ideally, our pH should stay on the alkaline side between 7.35 and 7.45 (the pH of our blood).

Foods are classified as acid-forming or alkalizing and this is based on the effect foods have on the body after digestion, not on their own intrinsic acidity or alkalinity. A common misconception is that if a food tastes acidic, it has an acid-forming effect on the body. This is not necessarily true. Very often, an acidic-tasting food is alkalizing. Citrus foods are a good example, especially lemons. They are actually alkalizing because the minerals they leave behind after digestion help remove hydrogen ions, decreasing the acidity of the body. A glass of water with lemon first thing in the morning, and before or after a meal, is a good habit to form.

Common acid-forming foods include processed junk foods and those that are high in animal protein. Some common alkalizing foods are spinach, soybeans, raisins, carrots and most citrus fruits. If your diet includes too many acid causing foods, it can cause health problems.

Common symptoms of an unbalanced pH includes heartburn, bloating, belching and feeling full after eating small amounts of food. Other symptoms could include insomnia, water retention, migraines, constipation with diarrhea, fatigue, a burning sensation on the tongue and in the mouth and halitosis (bad breath).

An acidic pH can occur from an acid forming diet, emotional stress, toxic overload, and/or immune reaction or any process that deprives the cells of oxygen and other nutrients, i.e. the elimination of parasites and worms. The body will try to compensate for acidic pH by using alkaline minerals. If the diet does not contain enough minerals to compensate, there will be a build-up of acids in the cells.

An acidic balance will decrease the body’s ability to absorb minerals and other nutrients (leading to imbalances and susceptibility to dis-ease), decrease the energy production in the cells, decrease its ability to repair damaged cells, decrease its ability to detoxify heavy metals, make tumor cells thrive and make it more susceptible to fatigue and stress.

It can lead to an explosion of parasites, worms, viruses, and bacteria, including candida albicans, and with an impaired immune system, your body won’t have the defenses it needs to combat their influence.

To prevent this imbalance, eat a diet that helps your body maintain the correct acidity-alkalinity balance.

Fresh Fruit & Vegetables - The Base of a Balanced Diet

According to naturopath Paavo Airola (How to Get Well) the ideal diet should have a natural ratio of four parts alkaline to one part acid. This is a good ratio for active people, because exercise creates a lot of acid, but less active people can handle a diet with a ratio of two parts alkaline to one part acid. To restore health, the diet should consist of 80% alkaline forming foods and 20% acid forming foods, and to maintain health, 60% alkaline forming foods and 40% acid forming foods. This means less processed foods and meats and more raw fruits and vegetables in the diet in general!

A comprehensive list of the acid/alkaline qualities of different foods can be found here and a summary chart from .

The Mineral Biochemic Tissue Salt (Scheussler Salt) NatPhos No. 10 is excellent to restore the alkaline balance in a very short time, taken every 2 hours. It absorbs immediately in the mouth and assists the body to rectify the imbalance. I always gave it to my son after he came back from children’s parties and had consumed a lot of sweets and cakes! Worked like a charm to go from overactive, bratty and irritable to decent and well-behaved! (It still works, for me too!)

Calcium & Vitamin C combination supplements are also beneficial to assist in restoring and maintaining the body’s alkaline balance.

But the secret is…

Consistently eat a healthy, balanced diet of good, organic, wholesome foods!
